Chapter Thirteen

Brody had been brooding over the problem with their bids on projects. For some reason, most of them came back as refused. They’d never had a problem like that before. Ever since they had found out he and Lamar had been trying to get to the bottom of the problem. So far all they had found out was that someone was undermining their credibility and the quality of their work. It was frustrating and beginning to hurt their business and the bottom line.

He looked over at Caitlyn as she watched the movie. He needed to put it out of his mind while they had her there with them. She was obviously picking up on his stress. She naturally would think it had to do with her. Having her there with them was soothing in a way. He just had to concentrate on the time they had with her. He had no doubt she was going to leave. Lamar still had hope, but he was more realistic. No matter how hard they tried to convince her she belonged with them, her past was in the way. She was probably right. It was too soon for her to have put it behind her.

Right now, they had her sitting between them on the couch. He had his hand on her thigh because he had to touch her. Lamar seemed to be the same way since he had his arm across her shoulders. Brody was drawn to her like a moth to a flame. She seemed to lift some of the darkness he often felt was inside of him.

Now that they’d had her with them, he wondered how he would be able to handle losing her presence in their lives. Sure, they could see her occasionally in Austin when they drove over there, but it wouldn’t be the same, and it wouldn’t last long.

The movie was coming to an end. He waited until the last possible minute to move his hand to grab the remote to the DVD player.

“That was a really good movie.” She stretched, dislodging Lamar’s arm from her shoulders in the process.

Brody turned off the DVD player and changed the channel on the TV to one that had something besides paid advertising on it. He looked back at her and couldn’t help but smile because she was smiling.

“Yeah, it was a good movie. Both of them were.”

“It’s close to midnight. I’m ready for bed.” Lamar stood up before reaching down and grabbing Caitlyn’s hand.

“Sounds good to me.” Brody took her other hand, and they pulled her to her feet.

“Slow down, you two. Your legs are longer than mine.”

They both slowed down, making sure not to pull her along anymore. Brody hadn’t thought about anything other than getting her in bed. No doubt Lamar had been thinking the same thing.

Once they were upstairs in the bedroom, he turned and reached for her. She smiled and took a step back. He liked the playful side of her. He was usually all business, but it was nice to loosen up some.
